Spirulina (arthrospira platensis) is blue-green algae that grows in both salt and freshwater. It has been used used for centuries by the indigenous people of Mexico, Africa, and Asia as a source of protein and other vital nutrients, and modernly it is cultivated and used as a source of nutrition all over the world. Spirulina is plentiful in bodies of water that are alkaline and warm, mostly found in lakes and inland bodies of water. It is high in amino acids and rich in essential vitamins and minerals, as well as the antioxidant phyocyanin, which gives it its blue-green color.

Chlorella is green freshwater algae with over 30 different known species, and many scientists believe it to be among the world’s oldest living organisms. Like Spirulina, it is a densely nutrient rich superfood, with high amounts of vitamins and minerals. It is often added to smoothies, drinks, capsules, and blends of spices. In Super Greens, we specifically use organic Chlorella cultivated in concrete-lined ponds in a pristine area in Japan. Additionally, this chlorella has a cracked outer cell wall, which enhances digestibility.

Finally, our Wheatgrass comes from freshly sprouted shoots of non-GMO wheat, specifically the species Triticum aestivum. Wheatgrass is known for its nutritional value and reputation as a superfood, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine, is interchangeable with barley grass. Like Spirulina and Chlorella, Wheatgrass is also high in antioxidants, as well as a high content of organic phosphates. Wheatgrass is usually consumed as a fresh juice, but also commonly made into a powder.
